It is now thought that virtually all ulcers, apart from drug induced ones, are caused by an infection of the bacteria called Helicobacter pylori. In addition to ulcers this bacteria is also strongly linked with conditions ranging from indigestion to gastric cancer. A study has also shown that a Helicobacter pylori infection can delay the normal emptying of the stomach after a meal, leading to 'reflux' of acid. There is also evidence that it is linked with dyspepsia, which includes stomach and chest pain that is relieved by eating, only to recur at night when the stomach is empty.
